Partnership announces biogas plant in Alberta
Once operational, the plant will create enough energy to power more than 3,000 homes and offset the carbon dioxide equivalent of more than 17,000 tonnes every year.
Biogas plants naturally decompose matter into nutrient-rich solids and liquids, which can be used to help grow agricultural crops and residential gardens, as well as into methane, a biological replacement for natural gas.
The plant will transform organic by-products from local livestock operations, the meat and food processing industries, restaurants, and institutions like schools into renewable energy and organic fertiliser.
Once constructed, it will represent another step forward for the Southern Alberta Alternative Energy Partnership (SAAEP), of which Lethbridge is a member.
The 39-member community economic development initiative is committed to encouraging development of the renewable energy industry in this region.
The plant has been granted all necessary permits and is in its final stages of development. C
Construction is anticipated to start in Q2 this year with energy production beginning in 2010.
