Nuseed policy boss highlights the importance of biofuels
Can you tell us a little bit about Nuseed?
Nuseed is a global agriculture innovator enabling the transformation of select crops into renewable and traceable sources of lower-carbon energy, and plant-based nutrition. Nuseed’s proprietary solutions contribute to solving global challenges like food security, human nutrition and climate change. By unlocking the intrinsic value and commercial potential of Omega-3 canola, carinata, sorghum, sunflower and energy cane to deliver VALUE BEYOND YIELD®, Nuseed empowers growers and end-use customers to rapidly scale today to meet current and emerging demand for generations to come.
Established in 2006, Nuseed has 10 locations in Australia, Europe, North America and South America, including three proprietary innovation centres, more than 400 employees, and sales in more than 30 countries. Our regional teams deliver top seed, service and new opportunities for farm customers. Their local work and Nuseed’s global reach maximise our R&D and help build strong Nuseed Value Chains that supply sustainable plant-based solutions to our end-use customers.
What role can the company play in the biofuels space?
Nuseed is working to transcend traditional biofuel feedstocks with the development of a global bioenergy portfolio that provides new opportunities for growers and sustainable plant-based solutions for end-use customers.
The company is building strong value chains, with strategic industry partners, customised to specific environmental, agronomic, certification, policy and end-use customer requirements.
Nuseed Carinata is the first commercial contract production programme in the portfolio, launched in Argentina in 2019, with global sustainable production currently being scaled in South America, North America, Europe and Australia.
With the advantage of being the seed technologies platform of Nufarm Limited (ASX:NUF), a global ag innovation company, Nuseed is also advancing an energy cane programme in Brazil, sorghum programmes in North and South America, and additional proprietary innovations to increase the supply of sustainable bioenergy feedstock worldwide.
The bioenergy portfolio optimises Nuseed's global R&D, regional operations and core competencies in greenhouse gas (GHG) savings, and data-driven certified programmes to deliver agriculture and energy solutions that are sustainable, scalable and accountable.
Can you briefly describe what you are going to talk about at the conference in June?
Nuseed’s presentation will showcase how Nuseed Carinata can contribute to the decarbonisation of the European transport sector, in particular in a hard-to-abate sector like aviation.
Namely, while stressing the non-competition with food, the presentation will highlight the strong sustainability credentials of Carinata, able to deliver significant GHG reductions, positive impact on land use and sustainable agriculture, as well as biodiversity.
