Novasep and Danisco to scale-up industrial betaine production process

Novasep Process, the bioprocess division of Novasep, a supplier of manufacturing solutions to the life sciences industry, and Danisco, a Denmark-headquartered company dedicated to food and feed ingredients, enzymes and biobased solutions, are to scale-up a new extraction process for the production of natural betaine.

The plant will use vanasse, a byproduct of bioethanol derived from sugar beet. Its use will enable Danisco to substantially increase the availability of natural betaine, which is used worldwide as a technical animal feed ingredient and currently in short supply.

Novasep Process is responsible for the engineering of the new plant and will provide the complete process line.

In addition to increasing the availability of betaine, the new process will allow the betaine-extracted residues to be further recycled and sold as crop fertilizer. The new process will be increasingly valuable as the increase of the bioethanol production using beets will generate more and more vinasses.

According to Juhani Kuusisto, director of operations at Danisco, ‘This new project demonstrates Danisco’s ability to adjust to new market development and to adapt its NS2P process to new feedstock. This process will substantially increase natural betaine availability on the marketplace.’

Danisco and Novasep will provide technological support for the betaine production plant with De Smet Engineering and Contractors, responsible for the construction, erection services and auxiliaries supply of new development.

Tereos, a player in sugar, starch and bioethanol production, will supply the vinasses and operate the plant at its facility in Origny, France.

The betaine from the new plant will be sold by Danisco as Betafin.
