New pellet facility to boost Georgia biofuels industry

Clean energy company General Biofuels Georgia is set to construct a new wood pellet plant in Washington County, Georgia to aid biofuels production.

The facility is set to cost around $60 million (€46 million) and the Georgia Department of Economic Development (GDED) is hopeful it will open in early 2014.

Georgia timberlands and local lumber producers will provide feedstock and produce will be transported via the Sandersville Railroad and Norfolk Southern Railway to the Port of Savannah for storage and shipping.

‘The biofuels industry in Georgia is growing. We have more commercial timberland than any other state in the country, as well as the workforce and the logistics infrastructure needed to move the product efficiently to market,’ says GDED commissioner Chris Cummiskey.

The new plant is expected to create 35 jobs in total upon completion.
