New Mexico launches new biofuels initiative

The New Mexico, US, congressional delegation launched an initiative to develop a plan to make the state a leader in the biofuels industry.

The meeting will bring together more than 50 national experts from industry, science, agriculture and government to develop a plan to make economically feasible biofuels that use the states natural resources.

Governor of New Mexico, Bill Richardson said: ‘Clean, sustainable domestic sources of energy are the solution to the US’s dependence on foreign oil. By focusing on New Mexico’s unique combination of climate and natural resources, scientific expertise, business infrastructure and economic policies, we are perfectly positioned to lead the country in the development and distribution of third-generation biofuels’.

Senator Jeff Bingaman citied the Obama administration as the inspiration for the new plan: ‘We are partnering with the administration on a strategy to advance clean energy technology with a multi-faceted plan for biofuels production that considers factors like land and water use, crop management, greenhouse gas emissions and jobs creation’.

Meetings will take place over the next three months to develop specific recommendations for New Mexico’s biofuels industry.
