Nedalco embarks on JV with Novozymes
The two companies will work together on the development of a more efficient fermentation process that will achieve maximum yields from C6 sugars (glucose) and C5 sugars (xyclose and arabinose) to improve the production of cellulosic biofuels, making it cheaper and more efficient.
CEO of Royal Nedalco, Ger Bemer, said: ‘Nedalco has successfully addressed the challenges of C5 sugar fermentation. This partnership will aim to widen and speed up the commercial availability of C5 fermentation technology to cellulosic biofuel producers all over the world.’
According to the joint development agreement terms, Royal Nedalco will develop different strains of C5 yeast and Novozymes will test them. When testing is completed Royal Nedalco will market the most successful yeast strain to the producers of second generation biofuels.
