Mitsubishi and Weyerhaeuser to invest in biomass plant

Two internationally renowned companies, Mitsubishi Corporation and Weyerhaeuser Company, have signed a Strategic Memorandum of Understanding and will now discuss the possibilities of joining forces and heading into the biomass-to-energy industry.

Mitsubishi, Japan’s largest general trading company has over 200 bases in approximately 80 countries and could join forces with Weyerhaeuser, one of the world’s largest forest products businesses, to construct a biomass refinery.

An industrial bio-pellet production facility looks to be the first project, with these two giants showing particular interest in jointly investing and operating a biomass-to-energy plant in the US that will be up and running by 2011.

The president and CEO of Weyerhaeuser Dan Fulton said: ‘Weyerhaeuser is committed to developing sustainable and renewable energy solutions for a carbon-constrained world. This opportunity has the potential to offer a significant renewable energy option here in North America and beyond while also creating green jobs in our operating communities.’

The union of these two firms brings together the strengths of both. Mitsubishi has networks worldwide as well as experience in the energy sector and bio-pellet production industry. Not only does it operate two bio-pellet refineries in Japan but Mitsubishi is also involved in the management of a bio-pellet manufacturer in Germany.

Weyerhaeuser has the ability to produce enormous amounts of sustainable biomass thanks to its managed forests.
