Malaysia approves biodiesel production licenses

Malaysia’s government has approved 91 biodiesel production licences with a total capacity of 10.2 million tonnes of biodiesel.

Deputy minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities senator A. Kohilan Pillay says that to further promote the use of renewable and sustainable forms of energy on 30 October the government approved the mandatory blending of 5% palm methyl ester with petroleum diesel for use in stages in the country.

At the end of October 14 plants were in operation with a total production capacity of 1.68 million tonnes.

Last year Malaysia produced 129,715 tonnes of palm-based methyl ester and out of that amount 95,013 tonnes valued at RM253.2 million (€55.1 million) were exported.

‘Initially, this will be implemented on government vehicles operated by the City Hall of Kuala Lumpur (DBKL) and subsequently extended throughout the country. Full implementation is targeted for early 2010,’ he adds.
