Indonesia flying towards biofuel use

Southeast Asia airline Garuda Indonesia is planning to use biofuels in all its aircraft by 2015.

It has been estimated 10 million litres of biofuel it would be needed to at least part power each of its 96 planes. Garuda plans to add another 48 planes to its fleet however, so the project will hinge on logistical aspects.

‘It is estimated that amount of fuel would be currently sufficient enough to meet our needs for a year,’ operational director Novianto Herupratatomo was quoted as saying. ‘But it is only a plan if we can find a biofuel producer that can provide large quantities at an affordable price.’

The Indonesian Transport ministry has also announced that all its airlines will utilize biofuels ‘to some degree’ by 2016.
