India approves 25 biomass power plants

Indian state Gujarat’s Energy Development Agency (GEDA) has given approval to private groups for setting up biomass power plants in 25 districts of the state.

The approvals amount to a combined generation of 317MW of energy.

‘The first of its kind power plant in the state that uses 300 tonnes of biomass a day such as fuel cotton stalks, sesame stalks and groundnut shells is proposed to come up in Amreli district,’ IVS Sharma, commercial manager of Amreli Power Projects, remarks.

Amreli Power Projects has purchased 5.5 acres for setting up the plant and will discuss with shareholders the modalities of commissioning the plant latest by May 2010.

Energy generation using biomass as fuel has been high in states such as Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Karnataka.

‘Over 46 energy projects using biomass as fuel have been sanctioned in AP and followed by 10 to 15 projects in Karnataka,’ Sharma says.
