Great Plains flying high with camelina

After the recent success of using camelina for aviation biofuels, two giants of camelina production have announced major aviation projects.

In the US, Great Plains will be partnering with BioJet in order to generate 200Mgy of camelina-based biofuels by 2012. These firms will also produce 2.3 million tonnes of camelina meal a year to be used for animal feed.

In the meantime, Sustainable Oils will be providing AltAir with camelina oil.

Sustainable Oils and its sister company will be producing 100Mgy of biodiesel and renewable jet fuel for 14 airlines at an oil plant in Anacortes, Washington. This refinery is expected to begin the distribution of camelina in 2012.

Camelina is now grown in nine states throughout the US and four provinces in Canada. Camelina-based jet fuel can reduce carbon emission from jets by around 80%.
