First biodiesel plant planned for Dominion Republic

A signed agreement between Globasol and TSK-Ingemas, of the Spanish group Globalia, will see the construction of the Dominican Republic’s first biodiesel plant.

Costing $40 million (€29.5 million) and expected to be completed within 14 months, the plant will convert 60,000 hectares of jatropha and higuereta into 100,000 tonnes of biofuels at the site in Azua province.

Included in the agreement is the Sur Futuro Foundation, which will promote the development of more plantations in this region. By promising local farmers future employment opportunities with the facility if they grow the crops, it is hoped more plantations will be set up in and around Azua province.

The Spanish ambassador Diego Bermejo and Asturias region president Vincente Alvarez Areces were both present at the plant’s signing ceremony.
