Ethanol acquisition in Brazil
Alto Alegre bought the Cofercatu plant in Florestópolis (Paraná state) for R$ 182 million (€76.8 million).
Alto Alegre's latest unit crushed 1.06 million tonnes of sugarcane in the 2009/10 crop year, which ended 20 April. It produced 66.35 million litres of fuel ethanol and 11,848 tonnes of sugar over the period.
The Cofercatu plant was founded in the 1970s as part of the government's Proálcool ethanol incentives programme and dedicates 80% of crush to production of the fuel.
In the 2010/11 crop year the unit is forecast to crush 1.35 million tonnes of sugarcane, which is close to its 1.5 million tonnes capacity.
The latest acquisition means that Alto Alegre's 2010/11 crush will approach 15 million tonnes of sugarcane at the five plants its owns or in which it is shareholder.
