Eni launches certified sustainable vegetable oil production in Congo

The vegetable oils produced in Congo meet the strictest sustainability and traceability criteria established by the European Renewable Energy Directive (RED). These standards ensure the protection of biodiversity, human rights, and labour conditions throughout the production process.
The initiative is a cornerstone of Eni’s commitment to supporting the local agribusiness value chain. Through the introduction of advanced mechanization services and improved seed varieties, the project is equipping Congolese farmers with the tools to significantly enhance productivity and sustainability. Approximately 200 new agricultural machines will be deployed, with half already in operation during the current farming season.
“This project represents a significant step forward for Congo’s agricultural sector,” said a spokesman. “We are not only promoting sustainable practices, but also helping to create jobs and build essential skills in rural communities.”
Around 400 tractor operators are being trained as part of the initiative, which also includes skill-building in logistics and industrial processes. In addition, the Loudima agri-hub will produce vegetable proteins for livestock feed, opening new growth opportunities for the agri-food sector and strengthening food security in the region.
The project complements Eni’s broader energy transition programs in Congo. Among them is the improved cookstove initiative, which has already reached over 300,000 people, reducing indoor air pollution and curbing unsustainable biomass use while improving community health and well-being.
