Ecotricity's biogas in National Grid

Following announcements late last year that it is to inject biogas into the National Grid, UK-based green gas supplier Ecotricity confirms that the first gas customer will be connected next month, and it will be delivering low carbon biogas made from organic material by the end of 2010.

In order to be injected into the National Grid, biogas needs to comply with quality standards set out by the DOE and Climate Change. But it is thought that these quality requirements could increase the cost of injecting biogas.

At the moment it is more cost-effective to generate electricity by burning the biogas, rather than injecting it into the National Grid, so Ecotricity’s main challenge is to get the right level of gas quality to make it economic.
