Dong Energy and Inbicon open demo plant
The 1.5 million gallon a year second generation plant will be operated by Danish energy company Dong Energy and biofuel producer Inbicon.
The facility, one of the world's first and largest second generation ethanol demonstration biorefineries, will use Genencor enzymes to convert the feedstock.
The Dong/Inbicon technology will provide ethanol for E85 fuel.
‘It has taken years of testing, perfecting, and patenting the biomass conversion process to reach this phase of large-scale commercial demonstration,’ Michael Persson, VP finance & corporate affairs at Inbicon, says.
The Kalundborg facility will work on scaling up the process to commercial volumes. Annual production includes 5.4 million liters (1.5 million gallons) of biofuel, as well as lignin pellets and molasses.
