Department for Transport updates feedstocks for low carbon fuels under RTFO and SAF Mandate

news item image
The Department for Transport (DfT) has published an updated list of feedstocks eligible under the Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation (RTFO) and Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Mandate.
The revised guidance outlines which materials can be used to produce renewable and low-carbon fuels, supporting the UK’s transition towards net zero transport emissions.
The RTFO and SAF Mandate feedstock lists categorise materials such as products, wastes, residues, agricultural by-products and renewable fuels of non-biological origin.
Certain wastes and residues may qualify for double rewards under the RTFO, receiving twice the number of Renewable Transport Fuel Certificates (RTFCs) per litre or kilogram of eligible fuel supplied.
The latest update includes several new entries, such as residues from ethanol production and wastewater from meat processing plants, reflecting the Government’s commitment to incorporating innovative and sustainable materials in fuel production.
These additions follow applications from industry stakeholders and ongoing assessments of emerging technologies and evidence.
This comprehensive update is designed to ensure that renewable fuel suppliers, producers and investors have clear and transparent guidance on how to categorise and report feedstocks. The changes also reinforce safeguards around sustainability, animal by-product regulations, and compliance with greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction criteria.
The DfT continues to work closely with industry partners to expand eligible materials responsibly, maintaining environmental integrity while stimulating growth in the UK’s low-carbon fuels sector.
