Danish Biofuel renamed hveiti

Denmark's Danish Biofuel has been renamed in order to reflect the 'proud Danish tradition for the processing of agricultural products'.

The company's new name, hveiti a/s, means 'wheat' in Old Norse.

However, as Svend Brandstrup, hveiti's managing director, says: 'The production concept remains the same as always, but with the name change, we get a name that more accurately reflects our concept and not only the bioethanol part of the production. Biorefining is about a better use of resources, i.e. how you can use the value of the entire feedstock and not just parts of it. It is the most immediate solution to the future need for food, feed and energy.'

Hveiti plans to break ground on its biofuel facility at the Harbour of Grenaa in 2012, which will convert wheat into 200 million litres a year of ethanol when it comes online.

The plant will help the EU meet the goals of the Renewable Energy Directive (RED), which states that 20% of the EU energy consumption must derive from renewable resources by 2020.
