Colombia and Mexico mull biodiesel plant

South America has long been home to an ethanol boom. Now two countries in the continent are joining forces on the biodiesel front.

Colombia's agricultural research institute CORPOICA and Mexico's southern Chiapas state will launch a $3.6 million (€2.7 million) biodiesel plant in Chiapas in January 2011.

The plant will be able to produce 38,000 litres of biodiesel a day from jatropha and African palm.

CORPOICA designed the plant as part of an agreement between Colombia's agricultural ministry and Central American countries for the development of technology for this sector.

The plant is financed by Mexico's forest and agriculture research centre Inifap and Chiapas' government.
CORPOICA has previously participated in the construction of two biodiesel plants in El Salvador and Honduras, each able of producing 10,000 litres a day.
