Chip waste-to-biogas plant completed
The project is a first for the potato industry.
The new plant in Price Edward Island, Canada, will accompany the existing wastewater treatment facility, and will handle production rates of 120,000 tonnes per year.
The plant will use potato plant residues, starch, spent frying oil and aerobic sludge from the wastewater plant.
Cavendish Farms will use the generated biogas from the anaerobic digestion facility to power boilers in its two co-located processing plants. The leftover digestate material will serve as a fertiliser to be spread over fields in place of potato waste/sludge, reducing odours.
The company anticipates the new plant to reduce its carbon footprint by 30-35%. It also estimates it will reduce current fossil fuel requirements by 10 million litres per year.
