Cargill expands German operations with new ethanol plant

Global agribusiness Cargill is to invest €60 million ($82.5 million) in building a new ethanol facility in Germany.

The plant will produce premium ethanol destined for the German and European beverage, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries by using feedstock from an adjacent wheat facility. It is expected to be operational by the autumn of 2015. 

‘This investment by our starches and sweeteners business will allow us to further build on our ethanol platform in Europe,’ says Frank van Lierde, executive VP at Cargill.

The new facility will be built alongside Cargill’s existing wheat processing plant on the company’s site in Barby.

‘This expansion will complement our existing network of ethanol facilities across the UK, the Netherlands and Poland,’ adds van Lierde.
