Canada moves forward with E5 mandate
The commitment was made in 2006 to regulate renewable fuel content in petrol and now the Government has developed draft regulations following consultations with industry, provinces and stakeholders for a September roll-out.
The proposed regulations are part of Canada's broader renewable fuels strategy. Under the plan, the government is also supporting the National Renewable Diesel Demonstration Initiative which involves further testing on the use of biodiesel to determine the technical feasibility of renewable diesel under a range of Canadian conditions.
The proposed regulations will be published in Canada Gazette Part I. Following a 60-day formal public comment period, final regulations will become law by September 2010.
‘Increasing the use of renewable fuel is an important part of the commitment we have made to farmers and rural communities,’ Gerry Ritz, Minister of Agriculture, says. ‘This regulation will provide the certainty needed for the renewable fuels industry to make investments that will create new jobs and provide new market opportunities for farmers.’
When fully implemented, the strategy's two regulatory requirements combined with provincial regulations will ensure a total volume of renewable fuel that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to about 4 megatonnes annually, about the equivalent of taking 1 million vehicles off the road.
