Bulgaria to boost biofuel blending

Located in south east Europe, Bulgaria is strengthening its biodiesel rules.

The country will introduce compulsory blending of diesel and petrol with biofuels from 2010 to boost the usage of the green fuels and meet European Union
environmental targets.

The new rules, which come into force in March next year, require blending of diesel with a 2% content of biodiesel. Biodiesel content will be raised twice a year to reach 8% by 2015 and 10% by 2020.

The obligatory blending of petrol fuel with 2% content of bioethanol will be introduced as of March 2011, according to amendments to the law on the renewable energy sources approved by parliament.

In 2008 Bulgaria produced 11,000 tonnes of biodiesel, according to the European Biodiesel Board (EBB). Leader Germany produced 2.8 million.
