BTL developments as Qatar joins forces

Qatar Airways, Qatar Science & Technology Park and Qatar Petroleum are to embark on a joint venture after Qatar Airways successfully managed the world’s first commercial flight using gas-to-liquid fuel last October.

This Qatar Advanced Biofuel Platform (QABP) enterprise, with Airbus chosen as project partner, comes after a detailed study that looked at biomass-to-liquid (BTL) jet fuel projects, possible bio feedstocks and by-products such as biodiesel.

Feedstocks have been found, with the potential and intention of being processed into BTL jet fuel to be used on Qatar Airways.

With one of the lowest carbon footprints in the aviation industry, Qatar Airways’ successful use of alternative fuels is a significant development.

‘Research activities on alternative and environmentally-friendly fuels like BTL will establish QSTP as a leading international hub for the application of new platform technologies’, says Dr Tidu Maini, Chairman of Qatar Science and Technology Park.
