Brown grease-to-biodiesel plant opens in San Francisco
The demonstration facility, which converts restaurant trap grease, or brown grease, into biodiesel was developed by fully integrated engineering, construction and technical services organisation URS Corporation and is the first US-based municipal wastewater programme to create biodiesel from the waste feedstock.
The plant will process 10,000 gallons a day of trap waste, recovering 300-500 gallons a day of brown grease before converting it to biodiesel.
The programme is an extension of the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission’s programme to prevent fats, oils and grease from being released into city sewers. It was financed by government funding, in addition to approximately $1 million (€0.7 million) from the California Energy Commission.
