Brasil Ecodiesel on the up

After a reshuffle of its finances and a review on its strategic plan in 2009 one of the biggest biodiesel manufacturers in Brazil, Brasil Ecodiesel, has reached operating profit since its incorporation in 2006.

The company’s gross margin reached 17%, compared with the negative figures of 2008 and the production of biodiesel in 2009 was 152,000m3.

As part of its new tactics, two refineries that utilised castor beans were closed, along with an obsolete grain crashing facility. Farms that could not grow other grains other than castor beans were sold.

However the company is not in the clear yet and still faces some challenges with regards to sustainability policies, including the annulment of the ‘Social Seal’ for two biodiesel plants by the Brazilian Ministry of Agricultural Development (MDA). Brasil Ecodiesel, seeking its cancellation, is disputing this governmental act.
