Boiling hot results for Yorkshire and the Humber

Based on statistics published by The Forestry Commission, Yorkshire and the Humber is the top region in the country for the installation of biomass heat boilers.

With 290 out of the 1,960 in England today, this figure is up 45 since last year.

Responsible for protecting, growing and promoting the sustainable management of woodlands and forests, The Forestry Commission claims that these boilers are some of the most powerful in the country, with the ability to produce 25% of England’s biomass boiler heat.

The Forestry Commission has a target of increasing wood fuel supply by two million tonnes per annum by 2020.

Rudie Humphrey, Yorkshire and the Humber’s wood fuel officer for The Forestry Commission, said: ‘Locally-grown wood fuel is a carbon-lean alternative to fossil fuels. Producing wood fuel through good woodland management improves biodiversity by creating new habitats for wildlife’.

Of the 92,082 hectares of woodland in Yorkshire and the Humber, The Forestry Commission manages 21,000 of these. However, 150,000 dried tonnes of biomass could be produced and used for local energy use if the remaining woodland became managed again.
