Biofuel plant for Quebec City by 2013
A $57 million (€41 million) refinery is going to be built in Quebec City and construction will begin this summer.
The federal government is awarding $17.7 million to the construction of this plant, while the province is adding a further $16.5 million. The majority of the cost will be paid for by the city.
As well as helping to reduce GHGs, this biofuel plant will also reduce the amount of waste being sent to landfill sites, as it will convert organic matter such as table scraps into alternative fuel.
When the construction is complete in 2013, Quebec City’s green-bin collection program will have been improved, with 70% of residential homes receiving compost pick-up.
According to the mayor of Quebec City Régis Lebeaume, the amount of biofuel generated at the facility will be enough to power 150 public transport buses for a year.
