Bio Base Europe’s GM poplars are popular for ethanol
The poplars were planted in May 2009 in an outside field in Ghent, Belgium. The crop has now been harvested and is ready to be converted into ethanol at the Bio Base Europe pilot plant.
Located in Ghent, the plant converts agricultural feedstocks such as wheat straw, corncobs and wood into second generation biofuels and bioplastics, among other products.
The company has teamed up with the Flemish Institute for Biotechnology (VIB) for its knowledge in biotechnology.
Bio Base Europe is a joint venture between Biopark Terneuzen and Ghent Bio-Energy Valley and has invested €21 million in the project.
