Australian Aboriginals produce biodiesel from used cooking oil

A scheme employing Aboriginals in Pilbara, Western Australia, to recycle used cooking oil into saleable biodiesel has received a grant from the Western Australian Government.

The Ashburton Aboriginal Corporation started the scheme to alleviate the poverty of many of the Aboriginals as well as providing a cheaper source of fuel to natives who need to drive the vast distances of Western Australia.

The original training programme, funded by the community partnerships programme of international mining conglomerate Rio Tinto, taught 15 aboriginals how to process used cooking oil into biodiesel.

Now the regional government’s cash injection of AS$147,000 (€86,000) will allow for an expansion of the scheme, providing employment for a further six.

‘Importantly, the profits from this business will stay within the indigenous communities of the Pilbara, funding further social and economic development,’ said regional development minister Brendon Grylls.
