Algae biofuel plant for Cape Cod

Plankton Power and Regional Technology Development (RTDC) are to form a consortium with various research organisations and the Massachusetts National Guard to establish the Cape Cod Algae Biorefinery in the US state of Massachusetts. The new facility will focus on pilot- and commercial-scale development of algae biodiesel.

Pending legal and regulatory reviews, the plant will be built on five acres of land on the Massachusetts Military Reservation. The biodiesel is a drop-in replacement for petroleum diesel and home heating oil and will be sold.

The consortium hopes to produce 1 million gallons a year of biodiesel from Q3 2010. If this is successful, commercial scale-up to a 100-acre site could eventually yield 100 million gallons a year – 5% of Massachusetts’ requirements.

Curtis S. Felix, CEO and founder of Plankton Power, said: ‘The MMR location is ideal for this pilot project – the on-site wastewater treatment plant would provide an excellent source of nutrients for the algae, and MMR's location close to the Cape Cod Canal would provide a convenient source of seawater as well as a renewable thermal energy source for algae growth and temperature control'.
