ADM awarded biomass plant grant

In the US, agricultural powerhouse Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) has received a grant to construct a facility to turn biomass into fuel.

The US Department of Energy (DoE) has awarded ADM a $24.8 million (17.2 million) grant to develop and construct the facility.

The ADM Advanced Biorefinery project will produce fuel ethanol and ethyl acrylate, a compound used to make plastics, adhesives, coatings and a range of other materials.

Pre-treatment technology used to begin breaking down the biomass will also be applicable in ADM's ongoing efforts to commercialise biocrude, a renewable product that can be refined into drop-in transportation fuels at existing petroleum refineries.

‘This funding from the Department of Energy will allow ADM to advance development steps concurrently, rather than sequentially, which will reduce the timeframe to commercialisation by about two years,’ Todd Werpy, VP, biofuels and biochemical research at ADM, comments.

ADM is one of 19 biofuel projects to receive Department of Energy funding.
