US produced 136 million gallons of biodiesel in May 2017

US production of biodiesel was 136 million gallons in May 2017, according to the US Energy Information Administration’s (EIA) Monthly Biodiesel Production Report.

The newly published figures reveal that biodiesel production was 9 million gallons higher in May than in April 2017. Year on year, the figures for April showed significant improvement on 2015 and 2016 (108 and 120 million gallons respectively).

Biodiesel production came from 97 biodiesel plants with a combined capacity of 2.3 billion gallons a year. The Midwest region remained the heart of the US biodiesel industry, accounting for 69% of the US' total production.

66 million gallons of biodiesel were sold by producers as B100 (100% biodiesel), with an additional 82 million gallons of B100 sold for use in biodiesel blends with diesel derived from petroleum.

1,054 million pounds of feedstocks were used to produce biodiesel in May 2017. Soybean oil remained the most widely used biodiesel fuel stock, with 546 million pounds consumed.

Texas remains the biggest biodiesel producing state in the US. Nine biodiesel producers have facilities in the Lone-Star state, with a combined total capacity of 474 million gallons per year, according to EIA figures.
