Explosion at Imperium Renewables' plant

A biodiesel plant in Washington, US, was the scene of a ferocious explosion that forced the evacuation of several businesses nearby.

All plant workers are safe and have been accounted for. Experts are now assessing the damage, determining what caused the blast.

The Imperium Renewables Biodiesel refinery stores thousands of gallons of dangerous materials.

The explosion apparently occurred when a tank used to mix glycerin and sulphuric acid became over pressurised.

The tank nearby was ruptured and spilled an unknown amount of sulphuric acid, which is dangerous if it comes into contact or is breathed in by people.

The explosion was so fierce that a large piece of the tank was blown 100 feet away from the tank through a fence.

A clean up crew is now in place to sift through the material and debris scattered by the blast.
