New tests reveal evidence of biodiesel spill in US river

US officials have confirmed that biodiesel has been spilled into the Columbia River, based in the state of Washington, Wenatchee.

According to the Associated Press (AP), tests revealed evidence of a spill.

The Department of Ecology said that investigators can now narrow their search for the source of the spill. The oil sheen stretched about a mile-long and 20-feet wide over the weekend (18-19 March, 2017).

According to AP, Department of Ecology spokeswoman Sandy Howard said that whoever is responsible could face a penalty for the spill as well as cleanup costs and other potential damages.

Crews have been trying to determine the source since the sheen was first reported by bystanders on Friday (17 March). They've used underwater sonar and cameras to help track down the source.

The Department of Ecology says it doesn't appear that wildlife have been directly impacted by the oil.
