ePURE names new secretary general

The European renewable ethanol association (ePURE) has named Emmanuel Desplechin as its new secretary general effective immediately, replacing Robert Wright.

Desplechin, who joined ePURE in 2013, had previously been the association’s director for government affairs, and has a long career in the ethanol sector.

Prior to joining ePURE, Desplechin held public affairs positions with the Danish biotech company Novozymes, and UNICA, the Brazilian sugarcane industry association, and has been secretary general of the Industrial Ethanol Association.

A French citizen, Desplechin holds a master degree from the Institute of Political Studies of Bordeaux and an LL.M in European Law from the University Carlos III of Madrid.

“This is a crucial moment for our industry as the EU considers its renewable energy mix for the coming decades,” Desplechin said.

He added: “I’ll continue to work with policymakers to make sure they understand how renewable European ethanol is driving the decarbonisation of EU transport—as well as the benefits it brings to the environment, the agricultural economy, and food security.”

ePURE represents producers of European renewable ethanol, a safe and effective low-emission fuel that is essential to achieving EU decarbonisation goals.

In a statement ePURE said: “Our 42 members, with 50 production plants in 16 Member States, account for 85% of the installed ethanol capacity in Europe. In 2015, European renewable ethanol transport fuel achieved 64 % greenhouse gas (GHG) savings compared to petrol, and its use reduced Europe’s annual GHG emissions by 6 million metric tons—equivalent to the annual emissions of 4 million new cars.”
