Port of Ghent

Port of Ghent is a medium-sized port located in the Hamburg-Le Havre range. It handles 50 million tonnes of cargo annually. Its stevedoring companies have vast experience in storing, handling of bulk commodities and logistics. The port of Ghent is a true leader in the biobased economy with a large production cluster for first generation biofuels. It currently focuses on developing the next generation of biofuels with Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant, leading in technology, feedstock and logistics. This is why the port has reserved 80 hectares of greenfield land to welcome new biobased investments.

driven by dedication - zeeland seaports

Zeeland Seaports, the ports of Vlissingen and Terneuzen, has many advantages when it comes to handling various types of cargo: the location on open sea, the depth of 16.5 metres, the congestion-free hinterland connections and the specialised terminals. But it's the people who really make our port unique. Everyone who does business with the Zeeland ports becomes acquainted with professionals who take pride in their work and their ports. And, as you know, pride is what fuels motivation. We know what is important for our clients and it is that extra step that makes all the difference.

Celtic Renewables

We are pleased to welcome back to Ghent Celtic Renewables Ltd who will be available for whisky tasting after lunch on day 2 of the conference. Initially focused on the 4 billion Scottish Malt Whisky industry as a ripe resource for developing biobutanol. The pioneering process combines the two main by-products of whisky production (Pot Ale and Draff) to produce high value renewable products, including biobutanol.

In a distillery, only 10 percent of what flows out of the distillery is future whisky- the rest is Draff and Pot Ale. The whisky industry annually produces 1,600 million litres of pot ale and 500,000 tonnes of draff which could be converted into biofuel as a direct substitute for fossil-derived fuel, thereby reducing oil consumption and carbon dioxide emissions, while also providing energy security particularly in remote/rural areas where the whisky industry is prevalent. The Celtic Renewables Ltd production process also produces other sustainable chemicals, acetone and ethanol, as well as high grade sustainable animal feed.
