REG Geismar plant could remain closed for up to four months

On 2 April, shortly after 6pm, a fire broke out at the REG Geismar biorefinery in Louisiana, US.

The fire was contained within a few hours and completely extinguished at approximately 11pm. Two employees were injured.

An assessment and investigation into the cause of the fire and the damage to the facility is ongoing and the biorefinery will remain shut down until these assessments are complete and repairs have been made.

On 7 April REG released an updated on the incident, stating: 'While preliminary damage assessments are still ongoing, the damage appears to be contained to a limited area of the production facility. The company's current expectation, subject to change, is that it should take two to four months to restore operations. We plan to incorporate a one-month maintenance shutdown that was previously scheduled for this summer to bring filtration and other upgrades online during the restoration time period.'

REG predicts that it will resume loadout operations for renewable hydrocarbon diesel in inventory later this week.
