US Navy tests aviation biofuels

In Maryland, the US Navy has successfully flown a MH-60S Seahawk helicopter over the Patuxent River. The helicopter, which was from the Air Test and Evaluation Squadron Two One, was powered by a biofuel blend produced from camelina seeds. The news comes less than a year after the Navy tested the same fuel on its F/A-18 Super Hornet. Results from this test showed that the fuel had no detrimental effects on the aircraft and it performed as expected throughout the duration of the flight. The Navy has said that it will continue to test aviation biofuel throughout 2011 in an attempt to realise its vision of utilising a 50:50 biofuel blend throughout ships and aircraft by 2012. ‘These biofuels provide the Navy with an “off-ramp” from petroleum to increased energy security,’ Philip Cullom, director, Navy Task Force Energy, commented.
