Abengoa Netherlands files for bankruptcy

Spanish renewable energy giant Abengoa’s Netherlands business has filed for bankruptcy.

In a statement, the company’s administrator Borsboom & Hamm said Abengoa’s Rotterdam ethanol plant has also been forced to close.

The plant is closed, removing around 380,000 tonnes per year of ethanol capacity from the market, and it is not clear for how long.

In a statement, Borsboom & Hamm, who have been appointed Abengoa’s administrator, said: “The trustee’s goal is to sell the factory as quickly as possible to a new and viable parent company.

“A number of significant parties have expressed interest in buying the factory and the trustee is setting up the sale process. The factory is expected to be up and running again on a continuous basis on short notice.

“This way the factory, production and employment will be retained, which will ensure the best result for all stakeholders. 84 people are employed by Abengoa Netherlands.”
