Making the most of it

Biodiesel emits 85% less CO2 emissions than fossil diesel. While the carbon intensity of mineral diesel is 3,128g/litre of CO2 equivalent, biodiesel produced from waste vegetable oil is 437g/ litre of CO2 equivalent – a saving of 2.7kg/litre. This has resulted in a significant increase in government targets all over the world.

 

However, the disposal of waste oils can prove problematic. Disposing of it into the drainage systems can pollute watercourses and block sewers. In some countries, such as China, it is often recovered from the drainage system, filtered and illegally sold back into the food chain. This can lead to severe health problems. Biodiesel, however, provides a high value alternative use.

 

Despite the benefits associated with biodiesel, it must be free from particulates and contaminates in order to comply with the European EN 14214 or US ASTM D 6751 standard and be considered ‘fuel grade’.

 

In Dubai, fast food giant McDonald’s now runs all its trucks on B100 thanks to Neutral Fuels, which uses UK-based Green Fuels’ community-scale ‘decentralised’ FuelMatic plant for biodiesel production with internal methanol recovery. Green Fuels’ other customers include HM Prison Service and PriceWaterhouseCoopers.
